Roaring into Action: Meeting Edinburgh Zoo's Sumatran Tigers

Edinburgh Zoo stands as a vital center for global wildlife conservation, playing a crucial role in the fight to save the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. Home to two magnificent representatives of this species, Dharma and Lucu, the zoo offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with these incredible animals and understand the urgent need for their protection.

Dharma, the elegant female, arrived at Edinburgh Zoo in 2017 from Fota Wildlife Park, bringing with her a spirit of resilience. In 2020, she was joined by Lucu, the impressive male who made the journey from Paignton Zoo. Together, they represent the future of their species, a future that hangs precariously in the balance with fewer than 300 Sumatran tigers estimated to remain in the wild.

Witnessing Dharma and Lucu in their specially designed habitat is a truly awe-inspiring experience. Observing their power and grace offers a glimpse into the wild heart of Sumatra and highlights the importance of the zoo's dedication to their survival. Beyond the public viewing experience, Edinburgh Zoo is deeply committed to Sumatran tiger conservation, actively participating in vital research and initiatives that contribute to the global effort to protect these majestic creatures. Every visit contributes directly to this critical work, making a tangible difference in the fight against extinction.

By providing a safe haven for Dharma and Lucu, and by working tirelessly behind the scenes, Edinburgh Zoo empowers visitors to become part of the solution. Come face-to-face with these incredible animals and learn how you can contribute to ensuring that the roar of the Sumatran tiger continues to echo through the forests for generations to come.
