Saving a Sentinel: The Wood Island Life Saving Station Restoration

Perched at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Kittery Point, Maine, the Wood Island Life Saving Station stands as a testament to maritime courage and community dedication. For over a century, this weathered gray structure has braved the elements, a silent guardian overlooking the often-treacherous waters. Built in 1908, the station served as a vital outpost for the US Life Saving Service, the precursor to the modern US Coast Guard. Within its walls, courageous surfmen stood ready, prepared to launch their small rowing boats into raging seas and perilous storms to rescue mariners in distress.

Years of neglect by the Town of Kittery, the station's owner, brought the historic building to the brink of demolition. Multiple attempts were made to tear down this piece of maritime history, a fate that seemed inevitable until a group of concerned citizens stepped forward. In 2011, the Wood Island Life Saving Station Association (WILSSA) was formed with a singular mission: to save the station from destruction.

WILSSA took on the formidable challenge of not only preventing demolition but also spearheading a complete and historically accurate restoration. The organization pledged to raise all necessary funds and secure the expertise required to bring the station back to its former glory. This commitment to preservation is a testament to the station's importance, both as a historical landmark and a symbol of selfless service.

The Wood Island Life Saving Station is more than just a building; it's a living testament to the bravery of those who risked their lives to save others. The station's restoration, driven by the passionate dedication of WILSSA, ensures that this piece of maritime history will continue to inspire and educate future generations. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our past, honoring our heroes, and protecting our maritime heritage.
