Centennial Park: A Historic Oasis in the Heart of Holland, Michigan

Nestled between 10th and 12th Streets, and River and Central Avenues, Centennial Park is a verdant oasis that has graced the city of Holland, Michigan since 1876. Originally designated as the village market area, the 5.6-acre park underwent a transformation over a century ago, dedicating it to recreational use.

Historical Legacy

The park's rich history is evident in its charming architectural features. In 1902, Teunis TenHouten, a Dutch immigrant, generously donated a rustic 20-foot fountain of rock, crafted by Johannes Van Lente. The fountain's presence lends a timeless elegance to the park.

Underground restrooms were added in 1904, providing convenience to parkgoers. Three years later, a bandstand was constructed atop the restrooms, offering a stage for musical performances and community gatherings.

Buy-a-Brick Campaign and Victorian Enhancements

In 1988, Mayor Philip Tanis spearheaded a "Buy-a-Brick" campaign, which resulted in the paving of the park's walkways. The bricks bear the names of donors, creating a permanent tribute to the community's support.

The Holland Area Home Builders Association contributed a gazebo in 1991, adding a touch of Victorian charm to the park. The City of Holland further enhanced the theme with Victorian lighting installed throughout the park, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
